Several years ago when I was eleven years old, I was diagnosed
with cerebral malaria which lasted for two months. During these two months,
I had to stay in bed for 24 hours a day and could not even stand up since
the disease went straight to the brain and it is usually fatal. In Zambia,
cerebral malaria is a very common cause of death and many dies from it
annually. I was only able to drink liquids and was unable to keep down
solid food. After going to the doctor on a Saturday, he took a blood test
and said that my reports were normal and that I would not have to continue
taking the tablets.
However, I went home, still
weak from the illness, and was sitting on a swing on our balcony in the
evening, when all of a sudden, I felt dizzy and fell down on the floor.
My father came out of the house to see what I was doing and he found me
on the floor, unconscious. He called my mother and they both picked me
up and took me into the sitting room to the couch. My parents tried to
see if I would regain conscious by talking to me, but I was not responding
at all. They then called my family doctor and she came over and checked
for any signs of life, but my heart was not beating and I had no pulse.
She tried everything she could do to save my life, but it appeared that
I was already gone. She told my parents there was nothing more she could
do.
My
family, having been Sai devotees for many years, decided to call on Swami
to help. My dad rushed to the temple in our home and brought vibhuti and
rubbed it on my forehead. They waited and prayed for some time hoping
for a miracle to take place, but nothing happened. They were crying and
were completely devastated when they realized they had to cover the dead
body of their only child with a white cloth. After being covered for about
fifteen minutes with the white cloth, I all of a sudden regained consciousness
and pulled the cloth down and looked at the clock in the sitting room.
I asked my parents, "What is that?" as I had lost any memory
of what had transpired. I even looked at my parents and asked, "What
are you?" My doctor was completely shocked and could not believe
what had happened. She told my parents that I must have lost my memory
during this time as I could not remember what had happened Slowly, with
Swami's loving hand guiding me, I recovered and gradually regained my
memory,. It is truly his miracle that I am alive today. I am really grateful
to Swami for giving me a second chance at life.
