You and I are One
Spiritual insight on unity comes from a scientific
observation on the oneness of matter

The universe tells the story of a whole that is now so very many parts. I peer into the sky, awed to see light from distant galaxies that has traveled from the far reaches of the universe over billions of years.
Popular science explains that this universe originated from the same, single source, torn apart in the Big Bang, ever expanding. That photon originated from the same source as me, yet it drifted far, far away. The universe tells the story of a whole that is now so very many parts.

You and I were one then; our matter a single source.
We drifted apart as was our natural tendency.
My mass reduced, my capacity diminished, I drifted endlessly from you.
Yet you came back for me; You returned.
From the fire of transformation you emerged as light.

Science explains that blazing suns are formed through a process of intense transformation.
You endured innumerable hardships and were transformed into a golden sun.
You could have stayed there, ever content, ever blissful.
Why did you leave? Why travel the vast emptiness of space?
Why endure being alone - a single particle of light?

It was compassion that caused you to leave.
You could not stay, content in the knowledge that you reached the end of the course.
How could you, when everywhere you looked, your kind was lost without faith, progressing all too slowly on the path to enlightenment.

You left to teach me that there is an end, that in the fire of transformation one day, I too will become the golden sun that you are.
You showed me that transformation is not enough, that I cannot be content with the blessings with which I have been graced, that the message must spread.
Compassion teaches that every particle in this universe must one day transform into a glowing sun.
You taught me that the message spreads through action.
You merely acted, endured and were patient.

Time and again, you traveled that void to reach me.
Your life became the message.
As I peer into the sky, amazement is replaced by gratitude, joy and bliss; gratitude for your compassion and the joy of reunion.

You and I were One then, and now we are One again.
