Currently we have a large list of Young
Adults, however about 10-15 of those YAs really make up the active core
of the group. Depending on a specific activity, and weather or not an
individual has the time and/or interest, we will usually see between 10-25
people turnout for our events and meetings. The vast majority of the group
is made up of students, and their studies come first, while center activities
always take precedence over YA activities. In fact it's truly amazing
to see the sacrifice, dedication and the unity that the YAs lovingly offer
to Swami to make it all happen.
Main Activities of Young Adults:
Center Service: Throughout this past year the YAs have participated
in many service projects with centers as well as on our own. We can always
be counted on to bring our energy and enthusiasm!
· Young Adults consistently help with making burritos and their distribution
in Long Beach and Downtown LA on Sunday mornings.
· Young Adults help with the organization and maintenance of the Glendale
Center's Food Bank at the Selby's house.
· Young Adults played a big role with this year's Beach Activity for Handicapped
Kids held in August at Point Doom (Malibu).
YA initiated service projects: Not only participating in Seva projects
with the centers, the Young Adults from across the Los Angeles/Orange
County areas have participated in projects such as:
· Project Achieve -- where we made dinner and did arts and crafts with
the kids.
· Habitat for Humanity -- helping to build housing for low-income family's
· L.A. Works · Volunteering to read with kids in local schools.
· Holiday "Holy Day" -- An activity where we sang Bhajans and enjoyed
the company of our respected elder devotees who are not usually able to
get to their Local Center.
And other projects that were done by the young adults on a recurring basis:
· Project Angel Food -- delivery of meals to sick people
· Missing links -- where Young Adults picked up food from food banks and
dropped it off at shelters.
Regional Events: The Young Adults have also played an integral
part in the region by participating in First Sunday at the Ebell in Santa
Ana:
· YAs give brief talks on alternating months, as well as doing Seva Dal
duty and Hosting one meeting per year.
· YAs are always very active at the yearly regional events like: Swami's
Birthday Celebration, Akandha Bhajans and the Regional Retreat.
The YAs love for Swami has been exhibited through their intense dedication
while practicing for these events, and in the wonderful presentations
they give.
Monthly Meetings: Monthly the YAs convene for:
Bhajans
Activities such as; Youth Oriented Workshops and/or Guest Speakers
Study-Circles (regionally)
