Planting a Seed
The origins of the Computer Class Project and its far reaching effects
SYAN Report

It started in New York City about 3 years ago. The need was clearly there and the means to fill the need were readily available. Together with the adults, computer classes at different levels were organized for disadvantaged inner city students as well as new teenage immigrants. With a group of Teaching Assistants, TA's, the program offers free classes, free transportation and a free breakfast and home-cooked lunch. Certificates are awarded at the successful completion of the course and help is given in tutoring, typing skills, and mentoring as needed.

Most important has been the increasingly effective integration of Swami's Education in Human Values (EHV) in ways that are memorable and fun. Many former students have assumed the service role of being TA's. Their good work builds the essential self-confidence they all need.

As the program has grown, the seed has been planted in other parts of this country and now there are groups working in the cities listed below and other groups are in the planning stages. Requests for information from other countries have also been received.

The following cities currently have the Computer programs in place: New York City, Cleveland, which has two groups, and San Francisco Bay Area.

The following cities are planning to implement the computer program: Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Washington, D.C., Raleigh/Durham, Minneapolis, Louisville (Kentucky), Pittsburgh, Portland (Oregon) and Miami.

In future issues, SYAN will explore how these computer programs are incorporating Human Values into the classes in a natural and graceful way.
